Patrón XO Café, Las Vegas, NV USA
Patrón is a brand of tequila products produced in Mexico by the Patrón Spirits Company, and Patrón XO is their “ultra premium” tequila. Either they’ve leased their name out, or they’re actually having a café/ice cream business inside Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Either way, these ice cremes are wonderful.
In case you’re wondering what the difference between ice cream and gelato is, gelato is mostly made with egg yolks and milk, and quite compact, whereas ice cream has cream in it and has air blown into it to give it a more fluffy texture. At least that’s what the masters will tell you, but fact is that today the line between gelato and ice-cream is pretty much gone. Häagen-Dazs, the ice cream company founded in New York in the 60s, say they make ice-cream. And the average Joe wouldn’t disagree with that claim, yet Häagen-Dazs ice-cream is as compact as a gelato. And if you go to Italy to buy gelato in the store, you’ll find fluffy air puffed frozen desserts called “gelato”. Because to Italians gelato simply means ice-cream.
I’ll write a much longer article about ice-cream making and the lingual confusions, but for now, let me tell you this: Patrón XO Café has really tasty, smooth flavorsome ice-creams/gelatos. They’re like a luxurious version of Ben&Jerry’s, you know a little too packed with stuff, but you still like it because it’s sinful. Although I prefer the nuanced, “grown-up-flavor” of say L’arte del gelato in New York, I don’t say no to a good ice cream packed with cookies and fudge. Patrón XO Café delivers what Las Vegas is all about – a little too much of everything, but it’s fun every now and then.
